I wanted to explore the idea of dreams through photography however, I didn’t want to literally photograph my dreams for example, every detail, as that would be dull and difficult. I wanted to take a more conceptual route and so I decided to photograph my dreams meaning. I began to explore this method of photographing my dreams meaning until I reached a theme that I liked and was able to take interesting images for. This theme was ‘Promiscuity’ in which I used LED lights to experiment with colour and made my models reenact promiscuous activities. Once I had found my theme, I realised that I did not need to continue recording my dreams and discovered that I can use this idea of photographing my dreams meaning as a starting point for future projects. It really helped to develop my project as starting from dreams to then advance to promiscuity is a huge leap. With this idea of promiscuity in mind, I researched Nan Goldin’s work who mimicked renaissance paintings. I then interpreted this is my own work and got my models to mimic renaissance paintings in a sexual way with props such as tights to reenact the gesture of choking. From this I learnt that props made my photos more interesting and so I experimented with the tights as blindfolds and fire. In my crit I was told that the images with the fire and blindfolds represented sisterhood which was extremely useful as I thought they were still portraying promiscuity. Therefore, for my final images I decided that I wanted to show the contrast between promiscuity, bedroom culture and innocence, so my final photoshoot consisted of bedroom culture which I researched from McRobbie’s feminist study and innocence in the milky bath which was inspired by Gabriela Mendez. Overall, I have learnt that experimenting with colour and props was successful however, for future projects I need to research from a wider range of sources.
